The Book of the Dead is my sixth stop along my quest to read the religious texts of the world。 It was a fascinating read that had similarities between other works， but also was incredibly unique。 Now， the translation I read was not ideal。 First published in 1895， with no revisions since， I， with my not-very-extensive knowledge of Egyptology， was able to go “oh we’ve disproved that” multiple times during the introduction。 And it’s no fault to the translation itself， it’s just very old！ So old in The Book of the Dead is my sixth stop along my quest to read the religious texts of the world。 It was a fascinating read that had similarities between other works， but also was incredibly unique。 Now， the translation I read was not ideal。 First published in 1895， with no revisions since， I， with my not-very-extensive knowledge of Egyptology， was able to go “oh we’ve disproved that” multiple times during the introduction。 And it’s no fault to the translation itself， it’s just very old！ So old in fact， it is before the standardization of translating hieroglyphs。 Do you know Geb and Khepri？ Get ready to meet them as Seb and Khepara。 And after a while it was pretty easy to figure out。 At the end of the introduction there are “lists of characters” and “lists of places。” Have fun on your journey through the Tuat！ Don’t let Apep eat you！ （It’s minor， I know， but those two got me real good。 Duat and Apophis， in case you weren’t sure。） And all the thees and thous really didn’t help。 My favorite old fashioned word we got was sniffeth。 That ones fun！The formatting was fairly confusing， but it actually made sense after a while。 We have our 150 page incredibly outdated and confusing introduction， which didn’t give me the information I actually would have liked， and then we have a transliteration of The Papyrus of Ani， a copy of The Book of the Dead from Thebes， located in the British Museum。 The transliteration is cool because you have the hieroglyphs， and directly underneath them we have both the pronunciation and the translation。 And we don’t just get The Papyrus of Ani， there are other supplementary papyri quoted from and referenced when we don’t have a chapter or the translation is substantially different。 And then we have the more readable translation。 I’m going to say “more readable” because it’s phrased in English， but it wasn’t all that readable honestly。 We have different sized text， line numbers inserted in the text， ransoms hieroglyphs occasionally， and it was hard。 You also get image descriptions of the illustrations of the papyrus， but not of the actual pictures， even though in the notes it had pictures from other papyri！ I found that to be quite frustrating。 But enough about the translation！ Let’s talk about The Book of the Dead， or by its other name， The Book of the Great Awakening。 This text is different to other religious texts I’ve read because it isn’t “one thing。” It isn’t stories， it isn’t hymns， it isn’t spells， it’s all three。 But the most unique part is that it’s personalized。 And sure， so we’re The Pyramid Texts， but they were for the king！ Ani is a scribe！ Part of the literate elite， but in the end， just a guy！ And it is he who will be unified with Osiris， who will be journeying through the Duat， who will rise on the sun barque with Ra， who will be able to turn into a hawk， if his funerary rights go according to plan。 I found the post death unity with the universe beautiful and moving。 It was incredibly intriguing to actually get to read the opening of the mouth ceremony and the negative confession， things I’ve known about for years but never been able to fully grasp。 And the journey through the Duat and the pylons of the night make a lot more sense。 This is an incredibly valuable book， and I’m glad that I read it， but I do wish that I’d picked up the 2015 edition instead。 It opened my eyes （pun intended lol） to parts of Egyptian mythology that felt murky。 I hopefully will get a better understanding with the more updated translation， when I’m able to pick it up。 As with all the books on the quest， I’m not giving them a star rating。 You can’t rate something that defined so much of human existence。 。。。more

I don’t wanna discredit the years of effort of translating and combining this book but， I can’t really give this a rating， I personally stopped enjoying it by the 250ish page mark。 Almost 600 pages of translated manuscripts and curses which I’m sure you’d enjoy if you’re interested in Egyptology。

This really isn't a book that I can review。 It's so ancient， so uncanny， so different from everything I'm familiar with in the world of religion， philosophy， and human culture even when I recognize it as something that ultimately led to all of those things。 I'm not going to lie: it got pretty repetitive and technical in places， and I kind of hope there's a less-annotated version somewhere， but there's a pulse that goes through it where its antiquity and the beliefs behind it come through， and th This really isn't a book that I can review。 It's so ancient， so uncanny， so different from everything I'm familiar with in the world of religion， philosophy， and human culture even when I recognize it as something that ultimately led to all of those things。 I'm not going to lie: it got pretty repetitive and technical in places， and I kind of hope there's a less-annotated version somewhere， but there's a pulse that goes through it where its antiquity and the beliefs behind it come through， and that's a peculiar feeling that's worth it for any reader to have。 。。。more

When one reads about ancient Egypt， pyramids as tombs and the Valley of the Kings， one usually hears about the 'Book of Coming Forth by Day' - or as it's better known the Egyptian Book of the Dead - being placed in the tombs either as scrolls of papyrus or painted on the more elaborate tombs。 So E。A。 Wallis Budge has translated one of the most complete copies of the entire book - with plates of the accompanying illustrations and hieroglyphics so the reader can read what the deceased was supposed When one reads about ancient Egypt， pyramids as tombs and the Valley of the Kings， one usually hears about the 'Book of Coming Forth by Day' - or as it's better known the Egyptian Book of the Dead - being placed in the tombs either as scrolls of papyrus or painted on the more elaborate tombs。 So E。A。 Wallis Budge has translated one of the most complete copies of the entire book - with plates of the accompanying illustrations and hieroglyphics so the reader can read what the deceased was supposed to know in order to pass into paradise and into the presence of their gods。Of course there are lots of additional illustrations - line drawings and snapshots of symbols and artistic renderings。 It would likely be spectacular in color - the difference between the green hawk and the golden hawk in this copy was mere shades of gray。 Reading the translations aloud seem to add to the mystic aura as these were the words and chapters necessary in the afterlife so that this or that would or would not happen。 Be able to eat and drink。 To be able to leave their tomb but not get back in。 All options so that this extensive book needed to be known by the deceased beforehand。This is likely a personal issue but I do have an objection to the "-eths"。 For example "。。。the tree groweth not， where the tree thick with leaves existeth not， and where the ground yieldeth neither herb nor grass。。。 （page 164）。 Then there is the Thou， thee， thy。 Verify - verily？？ Really？ Although no one has spoken ancient Egyptian in millenia， I somehow don't think they talked that way and it just reads/scans wrong。 2022-084 。。。more

I purchased the Audible version and was more than disappointed。 The book itself was spoiled by the narrator “Aryell Alkire” who apparently was paid nymph how fast she get get through the book。 Her reading speed was fast even if reading to oneself let alone narrating for somebody else。 Star rating for her = -5。
